Internet Banking Phishing Alert |
 |
Phishing – The most popular online banking scam
Phishing is a type of identity theft in which
fraudsters pretend to represent legitimate
institutions, like banks, in order to steal money
from your bank account.
It works as follows - You are sent an e-mail
claiming to be from your bank, requesting you to
confirm your login and account details. Usually the
e-mail contains a link which re-directs you to a
page that looks exactly like that of your bank’s
website. Your are urged to enter your details which
are then transmitted to the fraudsters who are then
in possession of all the information they need to
access and clean out your bank account.
Remember, Nedbank will never ask you to update or
confirm personal details or login information (PIN
or password) via email or telephone.
To protect yourself from phishing attempts, we
suggest you follow these security tips:
- Always access our internet banking service by
typing the full URL (http://www.netbank.co.ls) into
your browser. Never access the website through a
bookmark or saved page.
- Do not open e-mails or e-mail attachments from
unknown sources.
- Never respond to emails that threaten to suspend
your account or profile if you do not take immediate
action by providing personal information or requests
to confirm, verify, or refresh your account or
banking details.
- If you think that your personal details may have
been stolen, contact your bank to change your
details as soon as possible.
- Always check your accounts regularly and report
any unusual activity such as unauthorized
withdrawals or payments to your bank immediately.
- If you are unsure whether you are accessing a
legitimate banking site, check if the Internet
address at the top of your browser starts with
“https” – This means that the site is secured. (You
usually see an icon that looks like a padlock at the
bottom right hand side of your browser window as
well – if it looks like it is locked it means that
the website is secure).
If you are in doubt about the source of an e-mail
claiming to come from Nedbank Lesotho, contact the
Nedbank Internet help desk on: +266 58019998 or
forward a copy of the suspicious e-mail to
netbank_les@nedbank.co.ls
