Africa Day - 25 May 2009 |
 |
May 25th
is Africa Day - the official day of the African
Union - which this year has special significance for
the Nedbank Group.
It is a day on which we celebrate the founding 46
years ago of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU),
later succeeded by the African Union. Its aim is to
secure democracy, human rights and sustainable
economic development across Africa, especially
through ending intra-African conflict and creating
an effective common market.
It is a time to celebrate unity, which fosters the
understanding of the many possibilities our
continent has to offer in terms of history, culture,
art and natural beauty.
Just ponder over some astounding facts about our
continent; Africa is 30 244 049 square kilometres
(making it the second largest continent after Asia),
it consists of 53 countries and an estimated
935-million people live in Africa.
For us at Nedbank Corporate and Nedbank Africa, it
is also a day to celebrate our reach beyond South
Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland and
Zimbabwe. It is a day to honour our strategic
business alliance with Ecobank, which has created
the largest banking network in Africa with over 1
000 branches in more than 30 countries.
Think for a moment beyond southern Africa and of our
Ecobank colleagues in Benin, Burkina-Faso, Burundi,
Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic,
Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea,
Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Niger,
Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal,
Sierra Leone, Togo and Uganda.
Think for a moment of the diversity this represents
and of the opportunities this relationship offers
our clients through the convenience of a ‘one bank’
experience across the combined footprint of both
banking groups. We have reason to celebrate being
part of the emerging market!
Happy Africa Day
With warm African regards |
